The artist is best-known for his jaw dropping rendition of the popular Simon & Garfunkel hit, The Sound of Silence, for which he has not only received numerous standing ovations but also achieved great success online. Since its release in June 2016, the music video of this cover has been viewed by more than two million people on YouTube.
Ruhan, who grew up in Port-Elizabeth, has been working in the entertainment industry for the past twenty-five years. He was able to sing, even before he was could properly walk or talk and used to perform with his school choir and take part in plays and other concerts when he was still a little boy. He released his first solo album, Die Hemel (1994), at the age of ten and that was only the beginning of this gifted musician’s musical journey. Since then, he has performed about 150 shows per year, starred in various musicals and plays and released three solo albums, Mensekind (1995), I believe (1997) and Sal ek jou kom haal (2008), and two duet albums, Sound of Silence (2000) and Langpad (2006), with his brother, Jeanre. Ruhan and Jeanré also made the top 20 of Zing in 2004. According to him, timing played a vital role in how his journey with Touch of Class started. “I asked Deon to help me record an album, and while we were busy with the finishing touches Ronel resigned and I was offered the job. I also bought in as a partner on the studio and live performance sides of the business. We have released various gold and platinum status albums since 2012 and have shared the stage with some of the best singers in the country at shows like Afrikaans is Groot and Classics is Groot. We also had the privilege of working closely with Coleske’s Paulo Azvedo and Arnold Coleske on our album, Magic,” he shares.
This talented musician, who is also a skilled pianist, drummer, guitarist, bass guitarist, harmonica and ukulele player, describes himself as an introvert who enjoys spending time with his loved ones – his wife Marinda and daughter – with as little as possible around him. Hunting, fishing and singing are his greatest passions and he is very handy in the kitchen and garage. He also studied Electrical Engineering at Russel Road College. Experience has taught him to be patient and also to cope with crowds.
Andre Rieu is credited as the artist that he would love to work with in the future, but Ruhan admits that there are a few other people that he also looks up to: “I have various role models; my parents as people, Deon van der Merwe as a musician, Arnold Coleske as a business man, Freddie Mercury as singer and Robbie Williams as entertainer,” he reveals.
Touch of Class has just completed their second live DVD and is busy working on a new album, which he is very excited about. When asked what inspires him to sing, he answers: “The way in which lyrics and melodies can be combined and applied to communicate with people of any language and nationality, amazes me. I want to continue making music for as long as I possibly can.”
Deon van der Merwe is an acclaimed guitar player and one of the founding members of Touch of Class.
The group, Touch of Class, with Deon van der Merwe and Ronell Erasmus, was founded in 1985 and originally featured as backing band for Anneli van Rooyen, Manuel Escorcio and André Schwartz.
Their album, Ek en my meisie, was released in 1992 and received gold status, with more than 25 000 copies sold, before reaching platinum status two years later! This was followed by a number of golden albums, including Bamboesbos and Moenie worrie nie. Ronell’s gospel albums also did exceptionally well, with two of them reaching double platinum status (80 000 units sold)!
He has recorded numerous successful guitar albums, including Kitaarboogie, Hits of The Shadows and Crying Guitar, as well as A tribute to Ricardo Bornman, for which he received a SAMA Award in 2008. This gentle musician, who started playing guitar at the age of fifteen, has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology. Although he would have liked to make a difference in people’s lives with his qualification, it is his passion for music that really touches hearts. He listens to a wide range of genres – especially Baroque, Spanish music and more progressive Country and Blues – because he feels it can teach him more about his instrument. Deon is very grateful for all the success he has achieved in his career so far and regards it as a privilege to work with Ruhan. “I admire the quality of his voice, his ability to interpret all styles and the way in which he is able to adapt his voice to suit any song. He is everything that one can expect from a friend and partner.
